Horse & Rider Portrait Session – Leah, Dianessa, & Duke
Horse & Rider Portrait Session – Leah, Nessa, & Duke
Hidden Pond Stables | Mazomanie, WI
If you’ve ever had a once-in-a-lifetime horse, the kind that runs to the gate just because they heard your truck, then you’ll understand the bond between Leah and her beautiful black mare, Dianessa, affectionately known as Nessa. This striking warmblood was the heart of our portrait session together at Hidden Pond Stables in Mazomanie, WI, joined by their loyal sidekick, Duke the black lab.
We photographed their session on a warm summer evening in Wisconsin. The soft golden light, lush tree lines, and peaceful charm of Hidden Pond Stables created the perfect backdrop to tell their story.
A Bond That Speaks Without Words
Leah describes Nessa as “a girls’ girl through and through,” and that energy showed in every frame. Whether they were sharing a quiet moment or just walking together in the sunshine, you could feel the mutual respect and affection. Nessa came alive with the attention, ears forward, eyes soft, as if she knew this was her time to shine.
We started with classic black background portraits to highlight Nessa’s striking white blaze and soft expression. Duke even joined in for a few, though he wasn’t quite sure what to make of this tall, four-legged friend, Nessa was totally smitten.
Outfit Highlights & Style Notes
Leah came perfectly prepared with three distinct looks that added depth and personality to the session:
Professional Equestrian: Full riding gear in sleek all-black, with beautiful lace sleeves and subtle sparkle from her bridle. The perfect pairing of elegance and discipline.
Relaxed & Effortless: A blue linen button-down layered over a white tank, paired with jeans and sandals. These casual shots, especially with Duke, felt cozy, warm, and real.
Romantic & Feminine: A soft floral dress brought out the gentleness in Nessa and gave the final images a dreamy, heartfelt touch.
A Vision for Artwork
When asked how she’d display her portraits, Leah said:
“I dream of having a large print fine art portrait as the focal point in the entryway of our home.”
With the deep connection she shares with Nessa and the magic we captured at this Mazomanie equestrian property, I have no doubt that vision will come to life, and bring joy every time someone steps inside.
Photographer’s Notes
Nessa was an absolute gem throughout the shoot. She was curious, sweet, and totally at ease in front of the camera. Watching her interact with Duke was a highlight, especially when she tried to befriend him, despite his slightly skeptical expressions.
This session reminded me why I love creating horse and rider portraits so much. It’s about preserving the relationships that make our lives rich, honoring the quiet, unspoken bond we have with the animals who know us best.
