Wellington Horse & Rider Portraits: Amelia & Her Three Geldings
Spending the winter in Wellington, FL is a dream for many equestrians, and for Amelia, it's a season of training, competing, and making memories with her three incredible geldings. Originally from the Chicago area, Amelia rides with Galway Farms, which relocates to Wellington for the Winter Equestrian Festival (WEF) season. During our horse and rider portrait session in Wellington, we captured her special bond with each of her horses—Jolly, Nigel, and Corey—against the stunning Florida backdrop.

Meet Amelia’s Three Geldings
One of my favorite parts of every session is learning about my clients’ horses. Amelia shared so much about each of her geldings, and it was clear how much she adores them.
🐴 Jolly – The Bold & Confident One
A light bay gelding with a masculine personality. Once an equitation horse, he’s now transitioned into the hunter world. Amelia described him as very “manly,” and he certainly carries himself with confidence!
🐴 Corey – The Carefree Equitation Horse
A dark bay equitation gelding with a laid-back attitude. He takes everything in stride, always calm and collected, which made photographing him effortless.
🐴 Nigel – The Goofy Food-Lover
A grey gelding with the goofiest personality! He’s food-motivated and always looking for snacks, which made for some adorable, candid moments during our shoot.
Each of these geldings is so different, yet they all share an incredible connection with Amelia.
The Perfect Wellington Portrait Session
The weather was spectacular, with golden Florida sunlight filtering through the trees, creating the perfect setting for a luxury equestrian portrait session in Wellington.
📍 Paddock Location: A Dreamy Backdrop
I carefully chose one particular paddock where the light filtered beautifully through the trees. Not only did this provide a dreamy glow, but it also helped keep Amelia’s horses calm and comfortable.
📍 Arena Setting: Soft & Diffused Light
As the sun lowered, the arena lighting became soft and diffused, creating a perfect backdrop for Amelia’s elegant black background horse portraits.
✨ A Special Moment
Midway through our session, Amelia’s trainer stopped by and loved the images I showed her from the back of my camera! There’s nothing better than seeing a trainer’s reaction to beautifully captured moments between rider and horse.
Capturing Elegance with My Canon R5 & 135mm Lens
For Amelia’s portraits, I used my Canon R5 paired with my 135mm lens. This combination allowed me to capture:
✔️ Stunning equestrian portraits with gorgeous background compression
✔️ Crisp details in black background portraits, highlighting the unique features of each horse
✔️ Soft, dreamy bokeh that made Amelia and her geldings stand out beautifully against the Wellington landscape
