HORSE & RIDER PORTRAIT SESSION | Julie & Her Dressage Partners | Plymouth, Wisconsin
There is something unmistakably peaceful about photographing dressage horses in the fall. The world softens, the colors warm, and the quiet connection between horse and rider becomes the center of the story. Julie’s portrait session near Plymouth, Wisconsin was exactly that kind of afternoon—genuine and full of small moments that felt like they were meant to be preserved.
Julie had her two beloved horses, each incredibly different in expression yet equally devoted to her. From the very first frame, it was clear just how deeply these two partners have shaped her journey in the dressage arena and beyond. Their steady presence, their curiosity, and the way they leaned quietly into her hands made every photograph feel like a glimpse into their everyday bond.
We began our session tucked into tall autumn grasses, the maples behind us glowing with rich oranges and golds. Julie stood between her horses, and the three of them settled naturally into a rhythm—no posing needed. Just trust. Just ease. Just the simple beauty of a woman and the horses who know her heart.
One of my favorite moments of the day was the close-up we created of Julie beside one of her horses—eye to eye. These kinds of images remind me why I love what I do. They’re intimate without being staged, emotional without being heavy. They capture that connection that words never quite manage to describe.
As we moved down the wooded path, Julie changed into a deep green sweater that perfectly complemented the fall tones. Her mare walked beside her, relaxed and confident, mirroring her steps with the easy partnership that only years of riding together can build. There was laughter, a few nosy nudges, and plenty of those soft in-between moments that show exactly who these horses are when no one is watching.
Julie’s dedication to dressage shines through not just in her riding, but in the way she cares for and understands her horses. This session wasn't simply about portraits—it was about honoring the journey they’ve taken together, the hours in the arena, the early mornings, the breakthroughs, the setbacks, and the quiet companionship that strings it all together.
