Wisconsin Dog Portrait Session | Ann with Ariat & Otis

Some clients feel like they’ve been woven into your story from the very beginning, and Ann is absolutely one of them. Years ago, I photographed her gelding Gus and her dog Nicky during one of my early Wisconsin portrait seasons. It was a session that stayed with me, the way certain horses and certain pets mark a place in your heart.

So when Ann reached out again for updated dog portraits in Wisconsin, this time with her two new pups, Ariat and Otis, I already knew we were about to create something incredibly meaningful together.

Outdoor Dog Portraits in Wisconsin’s Golden Light

We met on a warm, glowing evening — the kind of Wisconsin light that feels soft and cinematic, filtering through the trees and wrapping everything in a golden haze. It was the perfect setting to photograph Ariat and Otis, both full of personality and charm.

Ariat, with his expressive brown eyes and steady presence, looked directly into the camera as if he’d done this a thousand times. He has an old-soul energy, the kind of dog who watches over his people with quiet confidence.

Otis brought a spark of curiosity to the session. His floppy ears, thoughtful expression, and easy-going posture made every frame feel natural. He was content to explore, pause, and check in with Ann — the perfect blend of independence and connection.

As Ann sat between them, wearing her blue and white dress and denim jacket, the three of them looked completely at home. These pet portraits weren’t just photos; they were a snapshot of a chapter that Ann has grown into with her boys by her side.

A Returning Client With a Whole New Story

Photographing returning clients is one of the most meaningful parts of my work as a Wisconsin dog photographer. There’s comfort, familiarity, and a shared history already built in.

I remembered Gus. I remembered Nicky. And I remembered the way Ann loved them.

Seeing her now with Ariat and Otis brought everything full circle. The love is the same — the faces are new. And watching her interact with them was such a sweet reminder of how life changes, softens, and expands with every new animal we welcome into our world.

Behind the Scenes of This Dog Portrait Session

Ariat and Otis settled beautifully into the pace of the session, giving us a mix of posed moments and completely candid ones. The warm evening tones created a timeless, painterly backdrop for both individual portraits and group photos.

As always, I kept the environment calm and relaxed, letting the dogs take their time adjusting to the sights, sounds, and scents around them. This approach ensures we get authentic expressions and portraits that feel natural and emotional — the kind that only happen when animals feel comfortable.
