Flinka & Sterling | Fjord Horse Photoshoot

Equine Photoshoot at Wisconsin Equestrian Center in Depere, WI

I take a lot of pictures in an effort to capture and celebrate the bond between horse and rider, but I love the opportunity to flex my creative muscles and create fine art. Photography is a powerful medium, freezing moments in time and celebrating the essence of our subjects, and when it comes to horses, their magnificent strength, grace, and composition make a mesmerizing focus for any photographer. So when Alexandria approached me about taking fine art pictures of her two Fjords, Flinka and Sterling, I couldnโ€™t have said yes quick enough!

The Fjord, otherwise known as the Norwegian Fjord, is a stunning breed that comes from the mountainous regions of Norway. The horse is of stocky and strong build and is recognized as one of the worldโ€™s oldest breeds. Flinka, a mare, and Sterling, a gelding, are both grey duns, which is rare in the Fjord breed. They are distinctive in appearance and striking to look at, making them so much fun to photograph.

Alexandria and her husband were so helpful behind the scenes, encouraging Flinka and Sterling and directing their attention to where I needed in an effort to capture the best pictures. Our session took place at the Wisconsin Equestrian Center in De Pere, which made for the perfect backdrop for the fine art portraits. And we were also able to snap some photos of their sweet dog!

My fine art portraits aim to capture the essence of my subject, striving to convey their unique beauty and character. With Sterling and Flinka, I wanted to portray not only their physical grace but their emotional composition as well. Fjords are known to be noble and gentle in nature, and I wanted to highlight the sweet nature of Sterling and Flinka. Fortunately for me, their calm demeanor during our photo shoot made capturing these timely portraits possible, and I feel as though their majestic presence is truly felt.

Taking fine art portraits goes far beyond the barn. Because I strive to bring out the intricate details of each horse and evoke an artistic atmosphere, the editing process is extensive. I can spend hours on just one photo, but I love the journey from first photo to finished product. I wanted to create pieces of art that Alexendria and her family could cherish and display, and I feel so happy with the results. Sterling and Flinka are breathtaking, and I like to think that these pictures will add to their lasting legacy.

As your photographer, I am constantly seeking out opportunities to capture the artistry behind each picture. There is so much beauty around us, from the horses we love to the relationships we hold close. And through the lens of my camera, I feel privileged to deliver images to my clients that convey these special moments.
