Horse & Rider | Jolene & Ruby

Horse & Rider Photoshoot in Poynette, WI | KJ Equine

I do a lot of sessions for special occasions, and I absolutely love that about my job. Getting to be a part of someone's special moment—whether that be a wedding, an anniversary, a proposal, or a graduation—is a privilege I do not take for granted. However, it’s not every day I get to take pictures "just because", but thanks to Jolene and her stunning horse Ruby, the opportunity soon arrived.

Jolene's reason for wanting professional pictures was simple enough, but it was a reason that touched my heart, nonetheless. This girl just adores her horse and wanted the pictures to prove it. I couldn't have been more excited, because the joy of creating keepsake photos and memories is one of the most important reasons I became an equine photographer.

Our session took place at KJ Equine in Poynette, Wisconsin, located about thirty minutes north of Madison. This is such a pretty part of the state, and the well-manicured equestrian center was a lovely backdrop for our photographs. The weather was cool and a bit rainy at first, but that didn't stop us from getting some incredible pictures. In fact, I love how the muted light really worked in our favor—Jolene positively glows, and Ruby's sweetness is on full display.

Ruby is a mustang trained primarily in the English style, but Jolene was quick to tell me that she isn't limited by one discipline. They do quite a few fun things together! And Ruby was incredibly sweet and well-mannered, a sure indication of Jolene's skills as a horsewoman. Jolene doesn't just adore Ruby—Ruby absolutely adores Jolene right back.

Angela Marie did Jolene's hair and makeup, which, when coupled with Jolene's stylish outfit choices, was undeniably gorgeous. I loved the mix of the leather jacket with the leopard print, but that gorgeous orange dress stole the show.

Jolene's husband and their three sweet dogs arrived a few hours in to join in some pictures, and I loved the family shots we got. Jolene's session is an excellent reminder that there doesn't need to be a special occasion to get pictures taken. Family—and however that word looks like to you—deserves to be celebrated, whenever and wherever you choose.
