5 Tips on choosing the right photographer for your senior pictures

Choosing a senior picture photographer

Wisconsin Senior Pictures

We have all seen the relics of graduations past. Glamour shots of girls with voluminous hair, their dark gown a stark contrast to bright makeup. Guys in tuxedos as they pose with forced stoicism. While there is nothing wrong with the traditional high school senior portrait—who doesn't love a good cap and gown combo?—we've made our way to the 21st century, where senior pictures have evolved to be intimate and personal; portraits that inflect creativity and individuality. Your senior pictures should be about you—and you deserve a photographer that won't stop until you're both satisfied. I've been both behind and in front of the camera, and I know how challenging it can be to find the right match. It's a big decision after all—these are pictures you will pass on to friends and family and potentially to future generations. So I have compiled five tips to keep in mind when you head out on your journey, making it easy for you to get it right the first time.

Look for Things That Speak to You
Remember, professional photographers are people, too—they all have different personalities, styles, techniques, and specialties. Look for things that resonate with you as you consider their profile. Styles and methods range greatly, so do not settle for anything less than what you absolutely love. Look for consistency. If a photographer has a consistent portfolio of pictures you admire, you will be able to go into the session confidently, knowing what to expect.

Make A Connection Right Away
Don't wait until the day of your session to meet your photographer. Establishing a relationship beforehand will help you to feel more comfortable. Getting your pictures taken can feel uncomfortable and unnatural for some people, but meeting the person behind the camera can create a pleasant environment and remove any unnecessary pressure. While phone calls, emails, and texts are an efficient way to communicate, meeting in person or over video chat will solidify the relationship.

Find a Photographer Willing to Invest
It's common for photographers to offer nothing beyond an online gallery when the final images are ready for delivery. While an online gallery can be great, I recommend looking for a photographer who offers high-quality prints in a variety of sizes. For example, I offer my clients a wide range of products, from photobooks to high-quality wall art. You will likely want to display your pictures right away, and a photographer willing to go the extra mile will have options ready so that you aren't stuck in line at the pharmacy, waiting to pick up your developed 4x6's.

Make Sure Your Photographer Is Flexible
Photographers lead busy lifestyles—but so do you! You want to look for a photographer that puts their time and energy into quality over quantity. So ask detailed questions about their rescheduling policy and what they do in the event of inclement weather. Have a backup plan—and make sure that you are both on the same page.

All of these tips are taken from my personal values as a photographer, and if you choose me for your senior pictures, I can guarantee that I will be there for you along every step of the way. From our initial in-person meet up to when I hand-deliver beautiful and custom-made artwork of your images, I cherish making the most of the little details. Are you graduating soon? If so, I want to extend my congratulations—and let's talk!
