Odessa | Belgian Warmblood Foal

Is there anything better than a frolicky filly or a mischievous colt? Probably not. There is something so special about the sweet innocence of a young foal, and I love any opportunity to capture their diverse and inexperienced personalities on camera.

I was delighted for a chance to photograph Odessa, a young Belgian Sport Horse, and meet her owner, Kendra. Odessa currently is boarded at Northstar Equestrian at Greenfield Farm in Green Bay, Wisconsin, which is where her session took place. This little filly had the most endearing personality, curious and independent with the sweetest disposition. Her momma is such a good mare, always keeping a watchful eye on her baby but happy to let Kendra and I babysit for a while.

Odessa's spindly legs were longer than her growing body and she had to sprawl out on the ground to eat the grass, making for many adorable photo opportunities. Watching her frolic against the backdrop of a lovely, sunshiny day was so much fun, and I enjoyed hearing all about Kendra's journey with Odessa and their plans for the future. Kendra has some impressive goals for Odessa—for one, she intends to use her as a jumping horse when she is old enough to be trained.

Foals grow so quickly, and it has been wonderful to get updates and watch as Odessa grows into a beautiful young bay. A rewarding aspect of my job is watching my clients' journey with their horses, and watching a horse grow from foal to adult is an extra special treat. I am confident Odessa and Kendra will go on to achieve great things, and I look forward to watching their story unfold.
